A Stage-by-Stage Compounding and Polishing Workflow

Professional paint correction isn’t one product — it’s a sequence, and skipping or reordering stages is one of the most common reasons a correction job doesn’t hold up under direct light. Here’s the process from assessment to final finish.

Stage 1: Assess Before You Correct

Before any product touches the panel, inspect the surface under direct or raking light to identify scratch depth and pattern consistency. This determines whether the job needs a full cut-then-polish sequence or whether a one-step compounding-polish will get there in a single pass.

Stage 2: Cutting (Heavy Defect Removal)

For panels with deep scratches, oxidation, or heavy swirl marks, a dedicated cutting stage comes first — using a wool or heavy foam pad on a rotary buffer or DA polisher to remove the bulk of the defect. This stage is about removal, not finish quality.

Stage 3: Compounding-Polish (Cut and Finish Together)

For moderate defects — or as the second stage after heavy cutting — a one-step compounding-polish handles both cutting and finishing in a single product. Applied correctly (dime-sized drops on a wool or foam cutting pad, worked in small sections with slow overlapping passes at controlled RPM), it removes remaining scratches and holograms while leaving a true, filler-free finish behind — meaning the result holds up after washing rather than fading with the first wash.

Stage 4: Final Polish (If Needed)

On panels needing the highest level of finish — show cars, high-end detailing — a dedicated finishing polish pass with a soft foam pad can follow the compounding-polish stage to maximize gloss and remove any remaining micro-marring.

Stage 5: Inspection

Before calling the job done, re-inspect under direct light for holograms or missed sections. This is the stage where inconsistent scratch patterns from earlier steps become visible — catching it here is far cheaper than a comeback.

Working Section Size and Technique Matter

Regardless of stage, work in controlled sections (roughly 2' x 2') rather than large areas — this keeps product from breaking down before the section is finished and ensures even coverage. Slow, overlapping back-and-forth passes are standard technique throughout every stage.
