P80 through P800, and what each one is actually for
What Alpha Is For
Alpha is the removal half of the LEVEL system. Everything it does happens before paint goes on: stripping coatings, shaping filler, grinding metal, leveling gelcoat, feathering edges, and taking primer down to a surface that is ready to spray.
It is not a finishing disc, and using it like one is the most common way people get poor results from it. Alpha’s job is to remove material fast and leave behind a scratch pattern uniform enough that the next grit can erase it cleanly. Once paint and clear are on the panel, you are in Omega territory.

Why the Disc Cuts the Way It Does
Three things are doing the work, and they are worth understanding because they explain why Alpha behaves differently from a conventional disc as it wears.
TiVFE self-sharpening ceramic. A true FEPA-standard ceramic grit. Rather than dulling under pressure, the grain fractures and exposes fresh cutting edges — so the disc keeps its bite instead of burnishing the surface. On its own, the grain cuts at least 30% faster and lasts at least 30% longer than conventional zirconia.
EAP Technology. A uniformed pattern for semi-open coated abrasive placement. Every grain sits where it is meant to, which is what produces a consistent scratch instead of a random one. A consistent scratch is the whole point — it is what makes the next grit predictable.
Resin-over-resin on PET film. The abrasive is bonded to a high-quality PET film backing through a resin-over-resin process, which is where the durability and pressure resistance come from. This is why the finished disc outlasts comparable discs by a wide margin — up to 8x — rather than just cutting faster for a short life.
The multi-hole pattern is laser cut and adapts to any vacuum system. It matters most exactly where Alpha works hardest: heavy removal generates heavy dust, and dust trapped between disc and panel is what causes loading and pigtails.

The Nine Alpha Grits

Working Through the Stages
Stripping paint P80–P150
Fast coating removal with controlled scratches. Start at P80 only when there is real material to move: multiple coats, heavy build, or a panel going back to bare substrate. P120 and P150 do the same job with less to clean up afterward, and on a single-coat strip they will often get you there just as fast once you count the refining steps you skipped.
The multi-hole pattern earns its keep here. Stripping produces the most debris of any stage, and a disc that loads up stops cutting and starts burnishing.

Body filler P80–P180
Shape filler quickly without deep scratches. P80 knocks down high spots and rough contours. P120 and P180 bring it to shape. The temptation is to stay coarse too long because it feels productive — but every extra pass at P80 is work you will do twice at P180 and again at P220.

Feather edging P150–P220
Smooth transition with low breakthrough. This is the most technique-sensitive stage in the Alpha range, because you are working a boundary between coating layers and it is easy to cut through more than you meant to. Alpha’s consistent scratch pattern helps: a uniform scratch means uniform cutting, which means the edge feathers evenly instead of stepping.
Let the disc do the work. Pressure does not speed up a self-sharpening ceramic; it just heats the panel and shortens the life of the disc.

Primer leveling P220–P400
Remove guide coat and reduce rework. Guide coat exists to show you what is low, and this stage is where you find out whether your earlier work was flat. P220 for heavier primer build, P320 for standard leveling, P400 to finish. If guide coat is still sitting in low spots after a full pass, the answer is more leveling — not a finer grit.
This stage is where rework gets prevented or created. Everything you leave here shows up under paint.

Blending P400–P800
Uniform finish with low pigtails. The last Alpha stage, and the handoff point. P400 into P600 into P800 progressively tightens the scratch until the surface will take paint without telegraphing anything underneath. P800 is the finest Alpha grit and the last thing that touches the panel before the gun.

How to Run Them
- Identify the dirt and debris first. Look at the panel before you pick a grit. The surface tells you where to start.
- Select the desired grit.
- Attach the disc directly to the backing plate, or to an interface pad if the contour calls for one. On Alpha the interface pad is optional — flat panels generally do not need it, curves usually do.
- Adjust the DA sander to the desired speed.
- Place the disc on the working surface, then turn the sander on. Starting a spinning disc against the panel is how you put a mark in it.
- Move back and forth in slow, overlapping passes until you reach the result you want.

Where Alpha Ends
Alpha stops at P800, and it stops before paint. Once the panel is painted and cleared, correcting orange peel, dirt, or debris is a different job with a different disc — that is the Omega system, starting at P1200.
